Differential

Differential

What is it?

A differential gets its name from its ability to turn power in different directions or at different speeds. What makes the differential special is that it allows the two output shafts to spin at different speeds. There are other methods of accomplishing this task, but the most common way uses a grouping of gears.

Give me an example!

When a car makes a turn, the wheels on one side of the car have to turn faster than the wheels on the other side. If there was one full axle between those wheels, the wheels couldn't turn at different speeds. That's why we use a differential and two half-shafts between the two wheels.
