Phases of Matter
What is it?
Matter may exist in several different states, or phases. At a certain temperature or pressure the matter could be either a gas, a liquid, or a solid.
The phase in which matter exists at a specific temperature and pressure is a result of the strength of the bonds holding the molecules together. Increasing or decreasing temperature and pressure can strengthen or weaken these bonds, resulting in a change of phase.
Give me an example!
Water is all around us in various phases. Fog and steam are examples of water molecules in a gasseous phase. The water we drink and bathe with is in a liquid phase. And the ice we use to cool our drinks is in a solid phase.
